In their almost thirty years of existence, Guided By Voices have proven themselves to be one of the most prolific acts of all time. Such is main man Robert Pollards ability to write a showstopping tune, one suspects that even his Budweiser-fuelled belches have an unforgettable melody. By 1996, he claimed to have written some 5,000 songs, and though many of them (especially in the early part of the bands career) last little more than a minute or two and were recorded to, at best, four track cassette helping to popularise the lo-fi movement of the early 1990s (alongside acts like Smog, Sebadoh and Beck) very few of them can be dismissed as disposable. As if to prove this,EVE Isk Pollard polished up the bands sound in the late 90s to make it more accessible, but the new production values alienated some ns, especially when 1999s Do The Collapse was recorded with The Cars Ric Ocasek. Still, Pollard soldiered on regardless, prolific as ever, operating with a variety of line-ups and releasing four more GBV albums between 2001 and 2004 until finally he called time on the project with a four hour performance in Chicago on New Years Eve, 2004.

Theirs is an extraordinary tale, given that, in the early years, much of Guided By Voices so-called wow goldreality took place in the imaginations of Pollard and his early collaborator, Tobin Sprout: they were recording songs, creating artwork and staging publicity photo-shoots long before anyone had ever expressed an interest in them. For a while, they refused even to perform in their hometown of Dayton, Ohio after early reactions to their bar shows proved inauspicious. But their persistence, the growing patronage of celebrity ns and, quite simply, their all-round brilliance, slowly paid off, so much that even Pollard and Sprouts wildest ntasies cant have anticipated the excitement generated by news last year of the reformation of the bands legendary mid-90s line up.

At their finest, Guided by Voices come across like a masterclass in the writing of popular music. Pollards astonishing ear for a tune, combined with his love of classic rock whether it be The Who,runescape cheapest gold. Reamde, checking in at 1,042 pages and rich in knowledge that will delight anyone who likes to learn how things work, will please Stephensons ns even though it is a departure from many of his previous novels.

All of Stephensons fiction has thrilling moments (and as his novels tend to be big, those moments can go on for many, many pages), but this is the first of his books that is nothing but a thriller, one that will sit comfortably on shelves weighed down by, say, the complete works of Robert Ludlum.

Reamde rings all the genre bells. The book isnt as ambitious as Stephensons Baroque Trilogy &8212; theres no attempt to do anything as grand as explain the history of money &8212; or even Cryptonomicon with its forays into cryptography and the ins and outs of data security. It is apb gold, however, a gripping read that will tide Stephenson ns over until his next tome hits the stands.

In Reamde &8212; bits of which take place in an online world &8212; the old shioned wood-pulp book has swallowed the computer game whole.

The most engaging character in the novel is a draft evader and former marijuana smuggler, Richard Dodge Forthrast. After spending a decade lost in a massive multiplayer online role-playing universe &8212; Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and its sequels &8212; and realizing that video games were more addictive than any chemical,wow cash for gold. Dodge develops, with a Chinese partner, his own online universe, a game called TRain which goes on to make them near billionaires.

The vast piles of money to be made from, and in, role-playing games is central to the novel. The Reamde virus, it turns out, is an attempt by Chinese hackers to shake down TRain players for their virtual gold, gold that when transferred out of the online world sheds its virtuality and becomes the real stuff. The hackers expect to walk away with a cool &36;2 million.

A wily old dope-smuggler/tycoon like Dodge pitted against equally wily Chinese hackers might be enough of a premise for writers satisfied with pots that only boil for a couple-hundred pages, and who are happy to keep just two, or, at most, three balls in the air.

For Stephenson, the virus, introduced at the beginning of the novel, is just a bit of throat clearing. Before hes finished, it will be all but forgotten, displaced in our memories by: a Russian gangster and the Rambo-like security specialist he has hired; a Welsh-born Islamic terrorist and his band of miscreants; spooks from M15 and its American counterparts; Christian survivalists in the remotest reaches of Idaho and … the list could go on. A character wonders at one point, if anyone else in the world &8212; in history &8212; had been in danger from gangsters, terrorists and bears in the space of a single week. When would the pirates and dinosaurs show up? (She hadnt encountered the mountain lion yet.)

It is, to be sure, the manic one-thing-after-anotherness of the plot that keeps us turning the pages of what has to be one of the stest reading 1,000-plus-page novels ever written.
